Here's a Michigan Business That Did NOT Happen

President Obama: "If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen." Or in the case of 13-year old entrepreneur Nathan Duszynski in Holland, Michigan, who tried to start a business, and somebody else (government bureaucrats) made that not happen, as I reported on CD last week.  Here's a video update from Michigan's Mackinac Center for Public Policy:

From the Mackinac Center: "In Holland, Mich., a 13-year-old entrepreneur thought he would be able to sell hot dogs and financially help his disabled parents with the purchase of a food cart. Unfortunately, city zoning officials have shut down his business, based on an ordinance that prohibits competition to brick-and-mortar restaurants from mobile food vendors. The Mackinac Center's own Anne Schieber investigates."

Politicians should think of small businesses as potential large business rent-seekers. Investing in small business today means reaping large campaign donations in the future. Politicians really aren't entrepreneurial, are they? :)

I wonder how much it cost the restaurant owners to get that law passed.

I bet it was cost effective.

sounds like a run-around. Why not just state clearly they don't want to look at a bunch of crummy food stands crunched into their little downtown area. Ya that kids cart was nice and new looking, but there will surely be some scary ones if you let just one start.OHHH and the hayday the FDA will have trying to protect the consumers. I just threw up in my mouth

As for their excuse of being "fair" to the restaurants, GFY.

On second thought it's on private property. That's a bunch of yak squeeze.

These types of food vendor carts are all over NYC... nothing outrageous about these and they are inspected by the health department.

Business owner approval rating of Obama sinks.

Apparently, the president is not making it happen with the group that makes it happen.

In every city in America, local burghers make sure there are no sidewalk vendors.

The worst abusers of commercial freedoms are state and local governments.

In North Dakota, they tell farmers not to put too many trailers on their farms for use as housing.

I don't know how it is in other parts of the civilized world, but most cities require permits! Health permits for one, does he have a food handlers card that is required in most cities. I don't even care about the other part(s) of their requirements. There is a lot of talk, like our republican governor of Arizona. Tax the internet stores, whether they are brick and mortar, and doing business in our state! The republicans and Chamber of Commerce want them taxed, also!
